The "Layla" album is a MUST HAVE for any guitarist interested in music from this era. Bobby Whitlock's "answer" vocals get intrusive and annoying sometimes throughout the record but the guitar playing is ACE from the first song to the last. When you hear both Duane AND Eric go off on "Keep On Growing," DAMN!

Perkins does play a great solo. Clapton seems to have problems with his amp or something, you can't hear his guitar at the end. You can see Clapton saying something to Perkins then pointing to his guitar. Iv'e read Cash loved the Layla album, thats why the Dominoes got on the show. Perkins was a very underated guitarist....

It's really quite simple actually, Capo 4 in this instance, but his original is in Capo 3. The chords used are C Am F and a type of B, basically use the shape of Am then take away your middle and ring finger and put the middle on the 2nd fret of the 5th string. That chord is used going from the verse to the chorus, and in the chorus. In the bridge it gets altered, add your ring finger to the 3rd fret of the 6th string. To do the riff play around with your middle finger on the C and F.

Holy crap thats intense. Solo gave me the chills. I felt like I was getting yelled at by an old woman with a really, really high pitched voice and its fucking lovely. I love how he incorporated that one lick that sorta repeats itself throughout his solo, however he throws in other notes and different melodies, absolutely fantastic.

Man, PLEASE..Clapton is a god in his own right but he is getting old now and his hands are slowing down. The torch has been passed, I experienced it when I went to see Clapton here a few years ago. Derek was backing him and when the solos came and Derek stepped up the crowd went nuts! Sorry, I love Clapton but he is no longer in the same zipcode as this kid.

They're both good at what they do, Derek's slide work is top-knotch, and slash is amazing at writing riff's and solo's. Sort of hard to compare the two really; different genre's and what have you. Though I don't really like Slash's work with Velvet Revolver, his stuff with Snakepit is fantastic.

Again, I'm 55 and I was at a Meyer Show and he had the crowd going crazy over one of his extended solos. I was probably the only one there to know that he was playing Jimi's solo from "Voodoo Child" note for note.I guess I give him credit for being able to do it, I can't :)What can you do, I guess it suck getting old.

I couldnt agree more. I absolutely love derek and i think he is the best replacement possible for duane because they have very similar styles, but at the same time i dont think you cant truly replace duane allman. Seeing the brothers live with derek and warren was spectacular. They are finishing in 09 so if you havent seen them i would make a trip to NY for their 10 day stint at the Beacon Center. It could very well be your last chance.

I dislike when people say Derek is as good or better than Duane. Don't get me wrong, he's incredibly skilled technically. Duane just had a better ear and could compliment the music better. Listen to Statesboro Blues and how good his interplay with Gregg's voice is. Plus, he was a much better non-slide player than Derek is, as is evident by the Dreams video from this same show. I don't think Derek can ever reach the level Duane hit on In Memory of Elizabeth Reed live. Love them both though!

maddman... First of all, he has learned from indian musicians, coltrane (sax) and gospel singers. How can you possibly say he's flooded with rip offs... And secondly, if you rip something off and do it 30 times better than the original... who caresssss??? Plus, there isnt a guitarist on the planet who hasnt done their fair share of ripping people off. Its what gets you your own originality over time. And I loooovvvee the allman bros, but seriously... Duane has nothing on derek, end of story.

Derek's doing that on purpose, he didn't "miss the key". He's quoting saxophonist John Coltrane from the song "Acknowledgment" off the album A Love Supreme. What Trucks is doing (and one of many things Coltrane is famous for) is playing a line, and then playing it again up a major third (two whole tones higher). This creates a cycle: after moving up a major third three times, you're back in the original key. I think Derek did a great job with it.
